DESCRIPTION: Coarse plant with soft downy leaves and pale pink flowers. Used medicinally to soothe coughs, sore throats, and relieve inflamed gums. Also used externally to soothe boils, abrasions, inflammation of the skin and insect bites. The roots were once used to make the original "marshmallow.” Tender young leaves can be added to salads.

DESCRIPTION: Tender herb best known for its strong lemon fragrance and flavor. Used in many tea blends, cakes, cookies, insect repelling sachets and in herbal bathing. Leaves rubbed on oneself will repel insects. Bring indoors for winter and do not over-water. Do not be alarmed when leaves drop off, just trim back and in spring plant outside again.

DESCRIPTION: Dramatic sculptural, tropical looking plant with clusters of large umbrella-like flowers. This plant prefers rich, moist soils. Remove the seeds early to prolong the plant's life, which is usually two to three years, although it is a readily reseeding biennial. Angelica leaves have a sweet licorice flavor and are cooked with acidic fruits to sweeten them. The roots have a stronger flavor and can be added to cookies, cakes and breads. Candy the stem for a special treat or steam it and serve like asparagus. Add the leaves to potpourri or herb pillows or to freshen a musty room. Leaves added to the bath add scent and calm nerves. According to legend, the herb took its name from an angel who revealed its virtues to a Monk during a plague; it had been widely thought to give protection from infection. Peasants would make necklaces out of the leaves for their children to ward off evil spirits and witches. Native Indians would make tonics to expel mucus.

DESCRIPTION: Dense, mounded, clumpy grass, releases a vanilla fragrance when cut and dried and remains fragrant for many years. Useful in potpourri and for making vanilla flavored vodka. Do not confuse this with Sweetgrass, which is used for smudging. If you plant catnip for your cat, plant Sweet Vanilla Grass for your pooch; they will really enjoy a chomp or two.

DESCRIPTION: Very leafy, biennial plant with thin hollow stalks with flat umbrella like small white blooms similar to Queens Anne's, forming many seed heads. Smallage seeds are what is sold in the stores as Celery seed. The leaves are used in salad adding a wonderful celery flavor. French chefs use the stalks in soaps and stews, but use sparingly since the flavor is much more concentrated than celery. Much easier to grow then celery, and is great to have in the yard when a recipe call for celery, simply walk out to your landscape and snip some leaves.

DESCRIPTION: Europeans would stuff pillows with mugwort in the belief that it would bring happy, vivid dreams. Its mild sage-like scent repels moths. Foliage is broadly divided with green leaves and purple stems. A medicinal herb said to treat headaches, it can also be used in herbal wreaths, and in bath sachets to relieve aches in muscles and joints. Fresh sprigs are put into beer. It is also valued as a magic plant or charm.

DESCRIPTION: A fragrant citrus aroma with finely cut foliage, its stems are used in wreath and basket making and serve as a moth repellent. In France, it is called "garde-robe," which refers to the inclusion of this herb in sachets to protect clothes from insect infestations. Also called "Lad's Love" and "old man" because of the legend of smearing its ashes in an ointment base to make pimply youths sprout beards and to bring new growth to balding heads.

One of the herbs of the Bible that grew along the trail of the Serpent that slithered out of the garden of Eden. Carried in the middle ages to develop psychic powers and protect against evil spells.

DESCRIPTION: A culinary necessity! A strong licorice flavor used in French cooking. Great for herbal vinegars, sauces, fish and stews. Be careful not to overcook this herb or it can become bitter. Historically used to treat snake bites and ease fatigue, it has a mild anesthetic effect and was once used to treat tooth aches. Host plant for the swallowtail butterfly.

DESCRIPTION: Pleasant balsam-like fragrance; is used in sachets and herbal baths. Adds a minty flavor to beverages and fruit salads. Since colonial days, the leaves marked the pages of bible verses; however it did not serve as just an innocent bookmark. Sleepy churchgoers would sniff and nibble on the edges and they would be revived during long, boring sermons. I wonder if it could be determined which parish had the most boring clergy by the amount of Costmary grown in the area? Perhaps students who snooze over their texts could benefit from this herbal plant. It is astringent and antiseptic; try an infusion of costmary leaves as an astringent after washing with soap.
